Start from the right size
Choose the destination preset (Instagram post, A4, presentation) before designing. Resizing afterwards reflows text and is where designs get ugly.

Add your logo, two fonts and your colour palette. Every new design then starts on-brand instead of on Canva's defaults.

Edit a template rather than starting blank
Pick a layout close to what you want and replace the content. Keep the template's spacing — that spacing is most of why it looks designed.

Use the toolbar tricks that save the most time
Background remover for product shots, Position for alignment, and Lock on anything you keep dragging by accident.

Export correctly for the destination
PNG for screens and transparency, JPG for photos, PDF Print with crop marks for anything going to a printer. MP4 for anything animated.

Common Canva mistakes

Five fonts on one design

Two fonts, used consistently, instantly looks more professional than a mix of decorative ones.

Text crammed to the edges

Leave a consistent margin. Cramped edges are the fastest visual signal that something was made in a hurry.

Exporting the wrong format

A screen-resolution JPG sent to print comes back blurry. Use PDF Print for anything physical.

Pro elements in a free export

Watermarked elements will either be paid for or exported with the watermark. Filter to free elements if you're on the free plan.
